Fixation Friday - Featuring Kristal Hollis

It's Fixation Friday time again, and this week we're getting our shifter on with Awakened By The Wolf.
Due out on June 1st, this paranormal from Kristal Hollis, and Harlequin Nocturne is sure to get your blood pumping.

Who's been sleeping in the Alpha's bed?

Exiled from his pack by his father, Brice Walker has secretly come home to visit his ailing grandmother only to discover a human and very desirable female sleeping in his bed. Their attraction is instant. But his new bed buddy seems determined to resist his Southern charm and Alpha allure.

For Brice, fiercely independent Cassie not only represents a chance to build a new life in Walker's Run but is also his one true mate. Cassie's reluctance dissolves when a rogue shifter kidnaps her, and now she and Brice must work together to save his pack. But once she witnesses the savagery of wolfan justice, can Cassie accept Brice as man, beast and her true love?

Read All The Books Challenge - Hosted by Herding Cats & Burning Soup

The goal? Pick an author who has published at least 45 books them ALL.This is an ongoing challenge. You can start whenever you want...and finish whenever you want.
There's no real check ins or pressure. You do what you can when you can.
If you've already read the book pre-challenge that's totally okay.

Hi all,
I thought I'd give this challenge a go.
If you want to join in, click on the picture above and follow the instructions!
The author I've chosen is Nora Roberts (AKA J.D. Robb). It took me soooo looong to write this post because she is so prolific. The reason I'm taking on this mammoth catalogue is because Nora was the first author I tried in the romance genre. She's the reason I got hooked. I read one of her books and began binging on as many of hers as I could find. Although it has been a while since I've read one of hers, and I haven't read any J.D. Robb books yet, I'd like to finish what I started. Even if it takes me a decade!

Here's the current tally. (If I've already read the book then the title will be crossed out. I'm still going through the standalones list to check them off.)

Shelly Crane - Significance - Book Review

The Blurb—
By NEW YORK TIMES and USA TODAY bestselling Author, Shelly Crane.

Maggie is a seventeen year old girl who's had a bad year. Her mom left, her dad is depressed, she's graduating, barely, and her boyfriend of almost three years dumped her for a college football scholarship. Lately she thinks life is all about hanging on by a thread and is gripping tight with everything she has.

Then she meets Caleb.

She saves his life and instantly knows there's something about him that's intriguing but she is supposed to be on her way to a date with his cousin. But things change when they touch, sparks ignite. Literally. They imprint with each other and she sees their future life together flash before her eyes. She learns that not only is she his soul mate, and can feel his heartbeat in her chest, but there is a whole other world of people with gifts and abilities that she never knew existed. She herself is experiencing supernatural changes unlike anything she's ever felt before and she needs the touch of his skin to survive. Now, not only has her dad come out of his depression to be a father again, and a pain as well, but Caleb's enemies know he's imprinted and are after Maggie to stop them both from gaining their abilities and take her from him. Can Caleb save her or will they be forced to live without each other after just finding one another?

Shelly Crane introduces the reader to a new breed of being, the Aces, in the start to her Significance Series. Overall a great read and an intriguing story with compelling characters. The story continues on for a series of four books with a couple of novellas and a spin off. There's also a movie in pre-production, scheduled for October, 2016. I'd definitely like to read more.

Having recently graduated after a barely tolerable senior year, Maggie is a bit lost. She endured a drastic life change when her mother left and her father lost his reason for living. She went from being a top student with a promising future and football star boyfriend to working part time in order to put the food on the table. In an effort to inject some fun into her life, she agrees to meet up with a friend and ends up saving a stranger from near death on the way. It turns out that the stranger, Caleb Jacobson, is her friend, Kyle's cousin. As soon as they shake hands something bizarre occurs. A connection is forged between them. One that could never be broken. They imprint, becoming each other’s significant.

Maggie is drawn into the world of the Aces. Her entire future changes in that one instant, and her father notices, breaking from his listlessness. As she struggles to contend with her need to be with Caleb and her father’s reinstated authority a new challenge arises. A rival family that doesn't want the Jacobson’s to have any more power. Maggie is in danger. She must push herself beyond her limits to try to survive.

I love the concept of this story, and I found the characters easily likeable. With a connection like they have it is easy for the characters to lose their individual identities. Their bodies crave each other so much that they basically need verbal permission or encouragement to be able to separate. In this case, Maggie tries to maintain her other life relationships and fights a little against becoming dependent on Caleb. I definitely appreciate this. Their love is sweet, and all-consuming at the same time.

The plot dragged a bit in the beginning for me, but once the action started happening I really got hooked. Kyle is an interesting character. I don’t think we've seen the last of his jealousy towards his cousin. The bad guys in this scenario have a lot more to their story, too. I’ll be reading the sequel, Accordance, for sure.

J.R. Ward - Blood Kiss (Black Dagger Legacy - book #1) - Book Review

—The Blurb
The legacy of the Black Dagger Brotherhood continues in a spin-off series from the #1 New York Times bestselling author…

Paradise, blooded daughter of the king’s First Advisor, is ready to break free from the restrictive life of an aristocratic female. Her strategy? Join the Black Dagger Brotherhood’s training center program and learn to fight for herself, think for herself…be herself. It’s a good plan, until everything goes wrong. The schooling is unfathomably difficult, the other recruits feel more like enemies than allies, and it’s very clear that the Brother in charge, Butch O’Neal, a.k.a. the Dhestroyer, is having serious problems in his own life.

And that’s before she falls in love with a fellow classmate. Craeg, a common civilian, is nothing her father would ever want for her, but everything she could ask for in a male. As an act of violence threatens to tear apart the entire program, and the erotic pull between them grows irresistible, Paradise is tested in ways she never anticipated—and left wondering whether she’s strong enough to claim her own power…on the field, and off.

This will be my first 6 flares rating for the year. J.R. Ward is one of those authors that I collect in paperback. I want the book in my hands so I can properly curl up with the brothers, or the angels, or any of her characters. Am I always, one hundred percent satisfied with her books? Not always, no. But this book pushed all my buttons and rang all my bells.

First of all, we have a female protagonist who, simply due to her birth, has had expectations placed on her. Paradise is a member of the Glymera. The elite class. She’s supposed to find an appropriate mate and be a good little breeder. She’s not supposed to get a job, and she sure as heck isn't supposed to sign up for training as a soldier in the war against the lessers. And yet, she achieves both of these goals because her daddy is a sweet, sweet man, and she has the courage of her convictions. She believes in herself, and that she deserves a different fate. I love her!!

Whilst doing her job she meets Craeg. Yes, he’s an alpha male (of course). He’s the strong, silent type. He’s applying to be a trainee, too. A member of the Glymera, he is not... Not that he’d want to be. He has his reasons for wanting to become a trained soldier, and he can’t afford to be distracted from his goals. When they both get into the program things get super-heated, and they both get more than they bargained for. The chemistry between them is sublime.

As always, in Ward’s books, there are multiple story lines going on. We get to revisit Marissa and Butch. The parallels between the couples are obvious. Both females from the highest class who've given expectation the bird (in the politest manner), and two working class guys who've seen hell and carry it around like a monkey on their backs. While Paradise and Craeg are becoming closer, Marissa and Butch are tearing apart. Ward also plants the seeds for a thickening plot involving Rhage. We don’t see much of the fight against the lessers at all. But there is plenty of action and a sickening twist in the plot to keep the gore mongers happy.

I devoured this book. I actually resented the fact that I had to put it down to carry on my life. Can I not just take 24 hours off from my bodily functions and family responsibilities? The BDB still rock. Nuff said.

6 flares.

BDB fans give me a shout out!
I'd love to hear about other paranormal series that are similar to this one. I need my hunger satisfied. Give me your recommendations in the comments!
