T.M. Frazier - Tyrant - Book Review (ARC)

Publisher: T.M. Frazier
Genre: Romantic Suspense.
Length: 230 pages.

**** Spoiler alert. You need to read King before reading Tyrant. This review refers to events that happened at the end of King and beyond. ****

OMG, I did not see that coming! This romance is dark and forceful. Absolutely memorable.

Doe aka Pup, aka Ramie Price has finally found her way home thanks to King. He offers Pup to her senator father in exchange for custody of his daughter. He sees it as the only way to be the father he wants to be, but King’s betrayal devastates him as much as it does Pup. Even worse, it backfires and he loses both his girls.

King has enemies that want to crush him and take away all that’s his. He knows, in order to protect Pup, he has to keep their connection hidden. He becomes a spectre skirting the periphery of her life, not even she, knows when he’s near until he wants her to. He is always there in the background, fighting for them to be together. But, there are dangers that neither of them could have foreseen, waiting to tear these two apart.

Ramie’s world is a foreign place to Pup. She’s torn away from the house on stilts and the man she now considers her home, only to find out she is a mother. The conservative good girl with a stubborn streak, now proudly sports a tattoo and an uncensored vocabulary. She doesn’t fit into the life of a senator’s daughter, but she has a son to think of now. The one thing she remembers from her past, a pair of chestnut eyes, belong to Tanner, one of her best friends and the father of her child. Her fiancĂ©. By following her instincts and with the help of Tanner, she slowly pieces together what happened and who Ramie Price was. The revelations send her spinning.

T.M. Frazier packs a punch in this finale. More than a couple of punches. I don’t want to give anything away so I can’t say too much about what I am thinking and feeling. I am still reeling. This is a page-turner.

The dynamic changes in Tyrant. The overall theme emphasizes family, whether it be by blood or not. Both King and Pup have had to build their own families; a fact that draws them close, but also causes them so much grief.

I felt sorry for Tanner being the love left behind. He has to come to terms with the fact that his fiancé fell in love with a felon and he has a fight on his hands if he wants her heart back.

I love that we get glimpses of Preppy’s humorous advice and King continues to join forces with Bear to take down the enemy. As with the first book, King, there are scenes that are packed with violence and gore. You have been warned.

A thrilling conclusion.

5 Flares.

M. Leighton - Strong Enough - Book Review (ARC)

Publisher: Berkley, 2015.
Genre: Romantic Suspense.
Length: 296 pages.

Simply superb!

This new series is a spin-off of the Bad Boys series and features a cameo appearance by Cash, Olivia and Gavin. Book two, Tough Enough, will be out in November.

Eight months ago, Muse Harper moved across the country to protect her father, from what or whom she doesn’t actually know. All she knows is her father, the colonel, is missing and she needs help to find him. Muse enlists the help of Jasper King; bounty hunter extraordinaire. If anyone can find her father Jasper can, so she’s told. Her mind won’t rest until she sets eyes on the Colonel, so she’s tagging along for the ride whether Jasper likes it or not.

Jasper doesn’t mind Muse coming with him at all. He makes no secret of the fact that she arouses him. A little entertainment on the way could be good for the both of them, so long as she doesn’t get attached. What she needs to realize is, he’s a monster. Of the worst kind. And he will end up hurting her.

Oh, Jasper! What a man, what a very bad man. But, oh so compelling. He’s blunt, straight forward, honest; however you want to say it. At the same time you know he is hiding crucial pieces of information that could send you running a mile. He is enigmatic, drawing Muse in while pushing her back. He wants to stay aloof, knowing any long-term association with him could be dire for her, but there’s just no staying away from her.

Muse is an innocent. She has passion and fire in her belly for the causes she believes in, but she is naive to what is really going on around her. Her father has fiercely protected her from reality, but now she must face up to some truths. She’s absolutely up for the challenge.

The scene where they meet and she measures him up for a suit is … *fans face with hand* … uh, steamy, and it escalates from there on. Jasper has the smouldering thing down pat, he will hook you straight away. Muse is clearly mixed up in something mysterious with danger written all over it. I couldn’t put the book down, to be honest, and the mystery deepens for the next book. The sneak peek into Tough Enough has me begging for that book, now!

M. Leighton just gets better and better she knows how to convey emotions to the reader like a direct injection through the eyeballs. You can always count on a brilliant twist in the story.

5.5 Flares.

J.T. Geissinger – Sweet as Sin (Bad Habit - Book 1) – Book Review

Publisher: Montlake Romance, 2015.
Genre: Contemporary Romance/ Romantic Suspense
Length: 386 pages.

Kat Reid meets Nico Nyx, lead singer of Bad Habit, when she is hired to do the makeup for their latest music video. It’s a lightning bolt moment for both of them, but even though Kat feels the heat of his stare, she doesn't trust his interest. She's more Anna Nicole Smith than Avery Kane, his skinny model girlfriend - currently passed out in the make-up chair. Avery is supposed to play Nico's love interest in the band's music video, but she's too wasted. Nico ropes Kat into doing the job and the sparks fly on and off camera.

I liked Kat immediately. She is a tough cookie with a mushy centre, staunchly defending causes she believes in. Nico isn't used to being told no. He is instantly enamoured, but she's more cautious making him sweat for 2 weeks before agreeing to date him. He burrows into her life full steam ahead, knowing that she is the woman he wants for good.

The tone of the book starts out fun and flirty, but halfway through it gets intense, descending into darker territory. Nico is an alpha, overly protective of his female. When the paparazzi mob Kat's house he snaps. These two have brutal pasts that impinge on their path to a HEA. Things get dangerous when the past finds them; the paparazzi become the least of their worries.

Trust is a big problem for Kat and I love that Nico immediately makes trusting each other a major priority. He's an unstoppable force in her life and things get intense at times, but ultimately these two are perfect for each other.

Be prepared for some gut wrenching scenes, danger, suspense and a lot of heat.

Brilliant! Can't wait for more.

5.5 Flares.

Lauren Smith - The Gilded Cage (Book 2 in the Surrender Series) - Book Review (Review copy)

Publisher: Forever Yours, 2015.
Genre: Contemporary Romance, Romantic Suspense.
Length: 368 pages.

Ooh, this book is even better than the first one.

*Spoiler alert - If you haven’t read book 1 - The Gilded Cuff - please read that before reading book 2, or this review, as surprise plot twists are revealed and carried through in The Gilded Cage.*

Hayden Thorne, sister to Wes Thorne and good friend of Emery Lockwood has something to prove. She has more ambition than becoming some society brat’s arm candy. She has an MBA, a feisty spirit and loud opinions she’s not afraid to share. She wants to show that she is capable of being the hero.

When she finds out that Emery’s twin, Fenn is actually alive and riding bulls in Colorado, she jumps on the private jet to rescue him from danger. She couldn’t have anticipated how much danger she would actually face, including the risk posed to her heart by this sexy, lost cowboy.

The author has written this from multiple points of view, so we get to see into the mind of the assassin. At first, I thought this slowed things down, but it added more anticipation to the story.

The author makes us wait for more than half the book for the reunion between Fenn and his family, but it gives Fenn time to let the news sink in and build the connection between himself and the Thorne siblings. He has his adopted family to think of and doesn’t want to leave them in the lurch. His thoughtfulness endears him even more to Hayden who has been missing that family connection all her life. Apart from her relationship with her brother, Wes she hasn’t had anyone who cared for her without wanting to change her. For someone so strong she is actually quite unsure of herself. She has never felt true acceptance. In Colorado, Hayden gets to experience a different take on life and she likes it.

What Hayden craves is surrendering her control to someone trustworthy and strong. Fenn fits the bill and then some. His situation is not the best. He lives in a trailer on his employer’s failing ranch. Sure, he’s more like family to them, but he’s not their blood. He’s trying to save the ranch from financial ruin, but fails. What could he possibly have to offer a classy woman like Hayden?

I loved their dynamic. She’s learning the simple things are the best and he’s finding his true place in the world. All while trying to dodge a determined assassin with a plan for vengeance.

Drama, action, suspense, love, lust and friendship. This book is well worth a read. Loved it.

5 Flares.
